Here’s a look at the Calendar for TECStudents, you can click on it to view it larger. A couple of things we are being intentional about this summer;
1 | Keep Momentum going
New England is a ghost town in the summer, and for a generation, our church nearly shuts down entirely in the summer, going down to just one service, offering maybe 5% of the ministry opportunities in the summer as during the school year. But we’ve noticed that this completely kills momentum in our Middle School Ministry. So even though our numbers will be way down compared to the school year, we are hoping that the continuity in offering our Middle School Program the same as the school year will help avoid the momentum drop off that usually comes with Summer.
2 | Bridge that generational gaps
Our Ministry is in the middle of a generational change with our students and families, where our current 7th graders and up are almost all the last of their families to go through the Youth Ministry, and our 6th graders and incoming 5th graders are almost all the first in their families to experience Youth Group. So there’s a lot of students who don’t already know the older students that well, and a lot of parents who are about to be involved with the youth group for their first time. Unlike years past, there’s not a single event that is Middle School or High School specific, and we’re being more intentional about getting all the parents in the same room.
3 | Building Traditions
I think tradition’s are huge in Student Ministry. I’m not saying we should all have sacred cow programs, but there are things we do in our youth ministries that are traditions and students love them. A tradition that faded in our ministry was students just showing up randomly at leader’s houses, so this year instead of having our summer midweek program at the church, we’re taking it to our leader’s houses, with the goal being like Tom Shefchunas put’s it “for student’s to be so comfortable in your house, they know which drawer has the forks and which cabinet has the cups.” So that’s our schedule. We have a few more goals for our summer schedule, but if we can see progress in these three areas, I’ll be extremely happy going into Fall. ]]>
