Youth Ministry Games : Death Ball

in Games on October 3, 2012

The first time we played this game, it seemed like everyone hated it. But the next week it was all they wanted to play, and has now escalated into one of the most intense things our students do at Youth Group before and after.
The game is played with anywhere from 6 to 25, above that its best to break into other circles.
Everyone stands in a circle with their feet spread about shoulder width apart and with their feet touching the feet of the players on their left and their right. Feet must remain planted the entire game, and players must remain standing the entire game (no squatting. We allow a slight bending of the knees, but legs cant be parallel with the ground).
The object of the game is to throw/hit/swat the ball (we use a volleyball) through other players legs. You can’t throw it through the legs of a person next to you until their are only 6 players left.
If the ball goes through your legs, you turn around, so you are now playing backwards and same rules still apply, you have to block it from going through your legs using only your hands. If the ball goes through your legs while you are facing backwards, you are out and the circle condenses.
Variation: For longer games for smaller groups, we play with the rule that if you are playing backwards and get the ball through someone else’s legs, you can turn around and play normal again.

Sorry to be the immature one here, but have you run into anyone trying to “hurt” the male players of this game?

Ha, totally understandable, one of my fears when we play it. With a volleyball, not much damage can be done. The greater casualty is when the game does get intense and people are spiking and slamming the ball and it hits faces. One poor guy got hit in the face twice in a row with pretty powerful slams.
