We are seeing a lot of discussion in the youth ministry community about ministry degrees. Do you have a ministry degree?
People often like to bring up two things when it comes to Ministry training, and these really kind of represent the two different viewpoints. People either believe Jesus didn’t have a college/seminary degree, and he turned out just fine. Firstly, there was no colleges around to get a Ministry degree in back then, obviously. More so, however, he was the Son of God, kind of had a leg up on things. But most importantly, the formal education of the day for many was the Rabbinic teachings.
The other point of view says Education is the greatest formal training for ministry, that you need a Ministry Degree or to attend Seminary to be a Youth Pastor/ Sr. Pastor. They often cite the fact that Jesus trained others through the Rabbinic model, so he clearly viewed education as a necessity.
Where do you stand on the issue?
