OmmWriter – Amazing App for Youth Ministry

in Free on March 8, 2012

Sometimes, it’s hard to get in the zone. I will sit down to write out a manuscript for a sermon, an outline for a series, a brainstorm for a meeting, or even a blog post, and it’ll take me about three hours longer than it should. There’s always a phone call. There’s always a status update. There’s always an email. There’s always deathly, crippling silence, or loud, annoying ruckus. Whatever ruckus is.

What do I do when I need to get in the mythical “zone” and hammer out some information?  I grab a pair of headphones and use OmmWriter.  It’s got several great perks to it, but the beauty of it is in what it doesn’t have.  It doesn’t have extensive formatting.  It doesn’t have page layouts.  It doesn’t have toolbars. It’s so perfect.
distraction free writing

The application takes up your entire screen, and blocks out anything (in theory) from other apps. There’s no distractions, no bouncing dock items, and no annoying twitter updates PLEADING to be checked.
You’re able to choose one of four font types, and one of four font sizes. But here’s where it gets even better. You select one of several low key backgrounds. Not a cheesy sunset or stock picture of a lake, but something simple. They’re preloaded, so no worries. You then choose whatever background music you wish to loop. It’s not a heavy bass, pop song. Instead, you get a soothing loop playing throughout your work, hence the suggestion of headphones. it’s melodic and relaxing. Amazingly, it helps you zone in, focus, and work on what you’re actually wanting to do…produce content. The last thing you pick is the keystroke audio. Each time you hit a key, it makes a sound. When I first thought of this, I thought “Annoying Powerpoint Lightsaber Sounds.” And to be honest, it’s kind of along those lines. But there’s something to it…something about the keystroke sounds that helps tune everything else out, gets my mind focused, and keeps me in the zone.
I don’t use it to construct final outlines, official manuscripts, emails, or anything else where structure is necessary. It’s perfect, though, for anything where you’re just needing to put some flesh to a thought process, or just to free-write ideas.
If you can see in the image, OMM has filled my screen and blocked out my second screen (laptop) as I work on March 7th's Manuscript.

At the very least, check out their site. I feel it’s been one of the better “time managment” investments I’ve taken advantage of…that is, as long as you can get past the “new age” vibe.

I used it last night to write 3 articles. I love it. Keeps you focused. Initially, I didn’t like the music, but I got into it last night. Thanks for posting it. I find the wordpress layout hard to write in, and full of distractions.

pretty awesome isn’t it?  Sometimes I wish it let you do a little bit more formatting, but that’s kind of against what its purpose is.

This is something I am going to be looking into. I love the idea. I do this anyways at Starbucks but I like the whole screen blocked thing.
