Whenever I’m asked by a student to answer the question, “Where did God come from?” I always start with something like this…
“God is eternal. He exists perfectly in trinity with himself, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Each of them are distinct personalities and yet maintain one-ness. They are all equally God.
Because God is eternal, he exists outside of time. He has always existed and will always exist. He has no beginning and no end. If that doesn’t hurt your mind, then I don’t know what will! But seriously, I believe this to be totally true. The Bible says that God’s ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). God would not be God if he wasn’t bigger and better than anything I could imagine. I don’t want to believe in a God that can be figured out by humans. So, while God’s existence blows my mind and makes my brain cells cramp, I choose to believe it’s true. The beauty of living in Jesus is that it requires faith. Even though I cannot see or comprehend, I must choose to step out and believe. That’s the decision that you have to make. Do you want to believe in a God who is so small that you’ve figured him out or do you want to believe in a God that is better than anything you can imagine?”
