There are definitely some good books included in this post. HOWEVER, I don’t think that all of these 12 books will help a youth pastor get better. Before I am burned at the stake of student ministry, let me explain why. Most of these authors are brilliant, but the books listed above are more theory or history based (by history, I am referring to the fact that most of these authors are no longer in student ministry trenches or haven’t been in student ministry at all) rather than future or practical based. The next generation of youth pastors needs to be challenged to be stronger leaders who are taking risks. I would include more leadership and emotional intelligence books (examples: Leadership and Self Deception, Generation iY, Enemies of Excellence, Spiritual Leadership, Presentation secrets of Steve Jobs, Tribal Leadership, Linchpin, Egonomics, etc… This comment is not written to take anything away from the books or authors above, but just pointing out, that youth pastors need to read books outside of the Christian bubble.

Thanks for the great comment. And we absolutely agree with you that too many of the “Youth Ministry Thought Leaders” are not in the trenches anymore, and I think in the next few years there NEEDS to be a huge swing away from that, because most of them are still a bit too far behind in the old Youth Pastor mindset.
And couldn’t agree more with your point on the next generation of Youth Pastors needing to be Leaders who take risks. We stand by every book on this list as being one that Youth Pastors should read, but we also didn’t mean for this to be an exclusive list of “Only Read these 12 books.”
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a fantastic comment.
