We’re trying something a little different with this round of VIVA! We know there are times when what you need is not a four week series, but a one-off lesson to fill the gaps. We know the reality of a Saturday night “Oh no, we don’t have a lesson for tomorrow morning!” moment, and we are here to help. VIVA! One-Offs are full lessons that can stand on their own. An hour’s worth of activities, content and discussion that doesn’t need to be part of a series, but can still help your group take a look at scripture and a topic that matters in their world.
Week 1: Music & Worship
Music is constantly around us. It’s playing overhead at the coffee shop, it’s in the soundtrack of our favorite TV shows or movies, and it’s in the songs constantly flowing out of small white earbuds into our ears and our brains. As a species, we love music. Using discussion, scripture, and the lyrics of your group’s favorite worship songs, we’ll spend this lesson looking at worship and music and why they work so effectively to connect us to God.
Week 2: Education
School is hard. Understanding calculus and Chaucer is tough enough. But that’s not nearly as hard to deal with as the pressure to live up to the expectations of parents, friends, ourselves-and to achieve the American Dream. We need to get the grades to get into the school to get the job to get the money to get the secure future. But does this view of education make sense in God’s Kingdom, or has there been a disconnect somewhere along the way?
Week 3: Worthy
We all have labels we wear. Some we give to ourselves and some are given to us by those in our life. Our labels too often make us feel like we aren’t good enough or worth enough when Jesus is wanting to give us different, truer labels that mark us as worthy. This week’s lesson will use a simple self-portrait, the story of Jesus’s interaction with the woman at the well, and a lot of discussion to show each of us that not only do we have worth, but we are worthy.
Week 4: Fear
There are plenty of things in life to be afraid of: spiders and snakes, falling off a cliff while hiking, giving a presentation in school and forgetting each and every word of it. A lot of us also have fear and anxiety about less tangible things, such as losing a friendship, disappointing our parents, or the future. We all probably know, on some level, that the Bible is full of verses that tell us not to fear or be afraid, but not many of us take the time to put that wisdom into practice in our lives. This lesson will help your group take a look at their fears (both obvious and less tangible) and see how those feelings can interact with scripture’s assurance of comfort.
Includes 4 lessons, instructions, and two slide templates for PowerPoint, Keynote, MediaShout, ProPresenter or another display system.
